Call for Nominations: 2025 Bokser-Liwerant Distinguished Early Career Award

This Bokser-Liwerant Distinguished Early Career Award is presented to an early career scholar in the social scientific study of contemporary Jewry whose work demonstrates excellence in applying social science theories and methods in the field.

It aims to recognize outstanding scholars and encourage successful careers in academia and professional or applied research.

Awardees are not required to have been active in the ASSJ, but they are encouraged to join if they are not current members. The award will cover one year of membership dues.

Judit Bokser-Liwerant is a prominent scholar in political science and Jewish studies at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Born in Buenos Aires and residing in Mexico since the late 1960s, she specializes in globalization, collective identities, and contemporary Jewry. She has led major academic programs at UNAM, edited influential journals and book series, and held visiting positions at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. As a member of Mexico’s National Research System and the Mexican Academy of Science, she is widely recognized for her contributions to the study of Latin American Jewish life and transnational identity.

Eligibility

  • Up to 10 years since PhD was awarded.
  • Minimum publications: 1 peer-reviewed book or 4 articles in peer-reviewed
    journals, book chapters, or research reports.

Eligible Disciplines
We welcome submissions from a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited
to: Sociology, political science, economics, anthropology, demography, psychology,
social psychology, linguistics, geography, contemporary history, communications,
education, religion, gender studies.

Evaluation Criteria
The scholar must demonstrate mastery-outstanding academic research/professional
practice.
The Selection Committee will primarily consider nominees’:

  • Published works to date
  • Teaching
  • Public engagement
  • Service to the academy and research community
  • Potential for future scholarly contributions.

Please do not use the ASSJ listserv to submit nominations, endorse nominees, or discuss the relative merits of different nominees. Self-nominations will be accepted. Nominations should be sent to: harriethartman@gmail.com by March 8, 2026

Award
In addition to the honor of being designated, the awardee will receive:

  • A certificate, an ASSJ membership for one year, and 1,500 USD
  • Presentation of his/her work on an ASSJ webinar
  • Announcement at the AJS annual meeting, in Contemporary Jewry, and on
    the ASSJ website
  • Public announcement in coordination with the awardee’s home institution
